Culinary test
Tonight will be the first time Sheryl Mae and I will be hosting and serving dinner to guests since we became full-pledged-cooking locavores.
In the old days, hosting dinner was a breeze. All we needed to do was employ the services of Colonel Sanders and Papa John, stock the fridge with Blue Moon beer, and that was it– the kind of party that Lindsay Lohan dreams of crashing.
It’s different now.
After careful deliberation, we decided to make a four-course French dinner menu from scratch. Yes dear readers, from scratch. From the baguettes to the final course, everything will be handmade.
I know, you must think that we are out of our minds for even attempting to tackle a cuisine of such high-caliber with just our newly acquired interests in cooking. So yes, maybe we are. But the only way for us to know if this lifestyle of eating real local food will work is for us to test how our culinary skills would fare in the real world. If by the end of the dinner, we find our guests secretly nibbling on White Castle burgers hidden under their coat sleeves, then we know there is no reason for us to stay this course. But if we find our guests clean up the remaining sauce in their plates with our freshly baked bread, then we know we have a future.
So what’s for dinner? We’ve decided on this menu based on the availability of the ingredients in our local market.
Salade Au Lard: A hot potato and bacon salad
Brie En Croute: Baked Brie with preserved fruit and sliced almonds
Bouf Bourguignon- Beef braised in wine
Mousse Au Chocolat – A chocolate and eggs dessert
Baguettes
All the ingredients that we will use are from local and beyond organic sources: From local grass-fed beef to local farm eggs, carrots, potatoes, dark chocolate, and dairy products. It is very satisfying to be able to make something good to eat and at the same time support the local agriculture scene.
We are very excited to do this so I will document the whole day with photos, text and perhaps video. Wish us luck. How I wish you guys could join us for this dinner.
